In Loving Memory of Craig Robert Pickell
July 12, 1945 – May 28, 2025
Craig Robert Pickell, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and United States Marine, passed away peacefully at home on May 28, 2025, surrounded by the love of his family. He was 79 years old.
Born on July 12, 1945, Craig lived a life marked by deep faith, quiet strength, and unwavering devotion to his family. Known affectionately as “Granddaddy,” he was the heart of his family—the steady hand in every storm and the warm light in every room. He gave endlessly of himself with grace, humility, and a selfless spirit that defined who he was.
Craig is survived by his beloved wife of 61 years, Betty Dotson Pickell. Their marriage was a testament to enduring love—built on trust, shared values, and a lifetime of memories. Together they raised four children: Traci Feitlich, Roxie Kapaun, Megan Pickell, and Michael Pickell. He was a proud grandfather to Alyssa Fiebig, Paul Daniel Feitlich, Brittnie Feitlich, James Reinberger, and Noah Reinberger, and a cherished great-grandfather to Ari Fiebig, Mackenzie Fiebig, Charlotte Fiebig, and Chloe Feitlich. Each of them carries forward the legacy of his love, strength, and wisdom.
From 1964 to 1970, Craig served honorably in the United States Marine Corps, including a tour in Vietnam from 1965 to 1966. Though he rarely spoke of his service, his family understood the quiet courage and sacrifice he carried. His patriotism was lived, not spoken—etched into his life through acts of discipline, loyalty, and integrity.
After his military service, Craig found peace and purpose in woodworking, creating teasures, furniture, and keepsakes that touched the lives of everyone around him. Each creation was more than a craft—it was a gift of love, shaped by patience and care. His workshop was his sanctuary, and his hands transformed raw materials into meaningful heirlooms that will be treasured for generations.
Craig’s faith in God guided every aspect of his life. He lived his beliefs through action—through prayer, kindness, hard work, and generosity. He showed his family how to love well, serve humbly, and walk through life with dignity.
He will be remembered as a devoted husband, a loving father and grandfather, a faithful servant, and a man whose legacy is etched into the hearts of those who knew him. Though he is no longer with us, the impact of his life will continue to be felt in every act of love and every story shared.
A private service will be held with close family and friends on Sunday June 1st from 2-5 pm at DeFiore Funeral 10763 Dundee Road, Huntley Illinois 60142. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you honor Craig’s memory through donations to the Huntley Legion, quiet acts of kindness, selfless love, and time spent with those you hold dear.
“And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.” – 1 Corinthians 13:13
